Hot Cocoa?2139 customer reviews
No Freaking Way.
Here in North America, we all grew up drinking hot cocoa (hot chocolate) made from a dry mix which contained cocoa powder. News Bulletin: Cocoa powder is the bottom of the barrel in the chocolate industry. I'm not kidding. Cocoa powder is a by-product of making other chocolate related products, and is usually made from cocoa beans that nobody wants to make chocolate out of! Have you ever eaten cocoa powder by itself? It tastes like you just licked the parking lot. Go ahead. Try it. I dare ya!
Here at Choklat we don't use any of that crap. Our TRUE drinking chocolate is painstakingly made from some of the finest whole cocoa beans that money can buy, roasted and ground to perfection then blended with a touch of corn starch (just like back in Aztec and Mayan times), and sugar. Three simple ingredients perfectly balanced and waiting for your "milk" of choice.
Not Cool (literally) and NOT chocolate.
You see, pretty much every hot chocolate mix you buy in the store is made with cocoa powder. In fact it has absolutely no right being called hot chocolate. It isn't chocolate! It's COCOA, and cocoa is the absolute bottom of the barrel in the chocolate industry. It's actually made from cocoa beans that nobody wants to make into chocolate, and is a by product of making cocoa butter. Each cocoa bean contains about 50% cocoa butter by weight, so even though nobody wants to make chocolate with it, there's still value in the fat which can be extracted. Cocoa butter, believe it or not IS chocolate. (but that's a good story for another day.... ) Manufacturers have to do something with the left over cocoa powder right? "Hey! Let's mix it with sugar and sell it to those stupid North Americans! Put enough sugar in it. They'll go crazy for it."
...and we did. At least until I started Choklat.
A true drinking chocolate such as the ones we make, and that Europeans have been enjoying for 100's of years is actually made from whole cocoa beans and good quality ones at that. The better the bean, the better the drink. They're roasted. The shells are removed, and then they are ground over several days into a silky smooth paste. That silky smooth and very intense paste is then mixed with sugar, milk, and a touch of corn starch (Aztecs did this too, except with maze), then heated to just below boiling point. The corn starch thickens the drink, and the cocoa paste mixes with the sugar and milk to make an amazing, silky smooth, thick and decadent drink, which, when cool, thickens to an almost pudding like consistency. No more black sludge at the bottom of the cup! Yay!
This ain't no Carnashin' Hot Choclat Ethyl! This here's the real McCoy.
What we make and sell here at Choklat is a TRUE drinking chocolate. We use one of the finest cocoa bean varieties in the world. We roast and grind them a certain way, then let the paste set so we can shave it into fine pieces to make into the mix. It's expensive. There's no doubt about it. However, the process from start to finish, takes almost a week, and when you compare it to grocery store hot "chocolate", well.... That just wouldn't be fair. Fun to experience? Yes. Fair to compare? No. We kill the competition. Aaaall day.
